    Motivation to Learn, Quality of Life and Estimated Academic Achievement: Medical Students Studying in New Zealand

    The quality of life of medical students and their motivation to learn are critical factors that have an impact on their ability to learn. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between medical students' perceptions of their quality of life, motivation to learn, and estimated grade at the end of the academic year. Two hundred and seventy-four medical students at years four and five of medical school participated in the study. Students filled in a demographic survey form, and shortened versions of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire and the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire. Significant correlations between quality of life and motivation to learn measures were obtained. Second, students who scored high on aspects of quality of life and motivation to learn also scored significantly higher on estimates of written grade. In conclusion, the results suggest that medical students’ perceptions about quality of life and motivation to learn are linked to estimation of academic achievement. The findings of this study further resonate with a key conceptual model in the motivation literature, which promotes the importance of creating opportunities for mastery learning, engaging task value, producing optimal learning contexts, and creating mechanisms for coping with and managing the inevitable anxiety-provoking learning experiences that medical students face.The quality of life of medical students and their motivation to learn are critical factors that have an impact on their ability to learn.     Adherence with isoniazid for prevention of tuberculosis among HIV-infected adults in South Africa

    BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is the most common opportunistic infection in HIV-infected adults in developing countries. Isoniazid (INH) is recommended for treatment of latent TB infection, however non-adherence is common. The purpose of this study was to apply in-house prepared isoniazid (INH) urine test strips in a clinical setting, and identify predictors of positive test results in an adherence questionnaire in HIV-infected adults taking INH for prevention of TB. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of adherence using a questionnaire and urine test strips for detection of INH metabolites at two hospitals in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Participants were aged at least 18 years, HIV positive, and receiving INH for prevention of tuberculosis disease. Univariate and multivariate analyses are used to identify factors relevant to adherence. RESULTS: 301 consecutive patients were recruited. 28% of participants had negative urine tests. 32 (37.2%, 95% CI25.4, 45.0) of the 86 patients who received INH from peripheral pharmacies said the pharmacy had run out of INH at some time, compared with central hospital pharmacies (p = 0.0001). In univariate analysis, a negative test was associated with self-reported missed INH doses (p = 0.043). Each 12-hour increment since last reported dose increased the likelihood of a negative test by 34% (p = 0.0007). Belief in INH safety was associated with a positive test (p = 0.021). In multivariate analysis, patients who believed INH is important for prevention of TB disease were more likely to be negative (p = 0.0086). CONCLUSION: Adequate drug availability at peripheral pharmacies remains an important intervention for TB prevention. Key questions may identify potentially non-adherent patients. In-house prepared urine tests strips are an effective and cheap method of objectively assessing INH adherence, and could be used an important tool in TB control programs

    Given that interventions for workplace stress have been shown to be effective, and behaviour change can be sustained over time (Veach, Rahe, Tolles and Newhall, 2003), a model that can serve to monitor the medium and long-term effects of both stressors and stress-management interventions should prove useful. After reviewing some familiar concepts in the stress arena, this paper presents such a model, building on existing work (Diehl and Hay, 2010; Ray, 2008; Selye, 1970, 1976; Zubin and Spring, 1977) and it is thought that this adapted model will be useful for management personnel, counsellors, educators, employees, and researchers

It has been noted that international students are affected by issues of safety, security, and quality of life. SUMMARY OF WORK: 549 medical students early in their clinical training responded to the World Health Organisation Quality of Life questionnaire (BREF version). The target variable was enrolment status (international; domestic). Other variables included: time of investigation (2009; 2011), gender, year of enrolment, age and ethnicity. SUMMARY OF RESULTS: Ratings for the social relationships and environment quality of life domains were lower for international students. Facet scores in both domains indicated that international students underrate their levels of quality of life (in 9 of the 11 facets). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study suggest that the International medical students are likely experiencing problems related to developing social relationships and coping with the environment, indicating a need for more sensitive and competent modes of intercultural communication and improving service delivery. TAKE-HOME MESSAGES: Focus needs to be applied to the two concerning areas of quality of life identified in this study: social relationships and environment. Given the fiscal and educational advantages associated with enrolling international students, it is imperative that Universities apply pastoral measures to improve their quality of life experiences.link_to_OA_fulltex

    Asian medical students: Quality of life and motivation to learn

    Issues linked with the notions of quality of life (QOL) and motivation to learn among Asian medical students have not been well documented. This is true in both the international and the New Zealand contexts. Our paper addresses this lack of research by focusing on the QOL of international and domestic Asian students studying in New Zealand, where Asian students form a significant proportion of tertiary students. Although there is evidence to suggest that Asian students do well academically, it was felt that an investigation into their QOL would be instructive as QOL will likely have an impact on cognition, behavior, general well-being, and motivation. The present study surveyed fourth- and fifth-year medical students to examine the relationship between QOL and motivation to learn and to consider how Asian medical students compare against European medical and non-medical student peers. The study utilized the World Health Organization-Quality of Life questionnaire (BREF version) and a shortened version of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire. The results show that the Asian medical students in this study generated significantly lower scores in terms of their satisfaction with social relationships compared with their non-Asian peers. In addition, international Asian medical students appear to be more at risk than domestic Asian students with respect to test anxiety. The paper considers the findings and the implications for quality of life, motivation to learn, medical education, and the Asian student community. © 2011 Education Research Institute.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
